In a proactive move to shield its customers from the impending energy price hikes, Public Service Electric & Gas Company (PSE&G) has announced a series of strategic initiatives designed to provide both immediate relief and long-term solutions.

This announcement, made on May 15, 2025, comes as a response to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s call for utilities to explore temporary measures to mitigate the financial burden on consumers, following substantial increases in electric supply costs stemming from PJM’s high capacity market prices.

PSE&G, New Jersey’s largest utility provider, is no stranger to navigating the complexities of energy supply and demand.

Acknowledging the sudden spike in utility rates, PSE&G’s President and COO, Kim Hanemann, emphasized the utility’s commitment to customer welfare.

“Utilities are not the cause of the unexpected rise in utility rates,” Hanemann stated, “but we have a role to play in providing options to assist our customers.”

In its updated proposal filed with the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU), PSE&G has outlined several short-term measures aimed at alleviating the strain on consumers.

Among these is the expansion of the Winter Termination Program, which offers protection against utility shut-offs for low-income and vulnerable customers.

Additionally, PSE&G plans to suspend reconnection fees and voluntarily forgo its carrying charges for a temporary credit starting July 1, 2025.

This credit is intended to counterbalance the increases in electric bills expected this summer.

These temporary measures are part of a broader strategy that includes the creation of a Temporary Supply Offset Clause (TSOC), which proposes varying levels of credits—100%, 50%, and 25%—to offset the anticipated bill hikes.

This approach aligns with guidance from BPU staff, reflecting a collaborative effort to provide tangible relief to consumers.

However, PSE&G recognizes that these short-term fixes are merely a stopgap.

The utility has long been vocal about the need for systemic changes in the PJM region to address the underlying supply and demand imbalance.

As the company continues to engage with stakeholders and policymakers, it is advocating for policy and legal reforms that would encourage the development of new energy generation sources, ensuring a more stable and sustainable energy future.

PSE&G’s commitment to customer support extends beyond these immediate interventions.

The utility has a robust history of working with customers and community organizations to promote energy assistance options.

These efforts have included educational workshops, direct communications, and partnerships with nonprofits to ensure that customers are aware of the support available to them.

As a result, over 415,000 customers have benefitted from energy efficiency programs, collectively saving nearly $640 million annually.

Moreover, PSE&G has enhanced its outreach strategies to identify and assist customers who are most likely eligible for assistance programs.

Last year alone, approximately 226,000 customers received over $265 million in support, with the potential for an additional 100,000 customers to benefit from these initiatives.

To further aid customers in managing their energy costs, PSE&G offers tools such as the Equal Payment Plan, which smooths out annual energy expenses into 12 equal monthly payments, and Deferred Payment Arrangements, allowing for manageable repayment of past-due balances.

These options, coupled with a comprehensive communication strategy involving bilingual emails, social media, and community events, underscore PSE&G’s dedication to fostering energy affordability.

As PSE&G navigates these turbulent times, its track record of maintaining customer affordability and reliable service stands out.

The utility’s efforts have not gone unnoticed, earning accolades such as the ReliabilityOne Award for electric system reliability in the Mid-Atlantic region and the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year award for energy efficiency program delivery.

Looking ahead, PSE&G remains steadfast in its pursuit of a clean energy future, a commitment reflected in its recognition on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for North America.

While the path forward may be fraught with challenges, PSE&G’s strategic initiatives and collaborative spirit offer a glimmer of hope for consumers bracing for the impacts of rising energy costs.
