Trump-Musk Feud Erupts

A public feud has erupted between former President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk over a new tax-cut bill, leading to mutual recriminations and a significant drop in Tesla’s market value. The bitter split between the former allies, once a powerful political and financial force, signals profound implications for both their empires and the Republican Party.

The political landscape, already a volatile terrain of shifting alliances and public spats, witnessed a particularly explosive rupture this week as the once-unbreakable bond between former President Donald Trump and billionaire tech titan Elon Musk disintegrated into a spectacle of mutual recrimination.

What began as a seemingly minor policy disagreement over a tax-cut bill quickly escalated into a full-blown barroom brawl, played out in real-time across social media platforms, leaving a trail of shattered market value and profound political implications.

The catalyst was Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” a sweeping tax-cut and spending package that Musk, once a key architect of government efficiency, deemed a “disgusting abomination.”

For days, the billionaire had campaigned vociferously against it, warning it would swell the nation’s already gargantuan $36.2 trillion debt.

His public denouncements, amplified by his colossal online following, created an unexpected chasm within the Republican Party, threatening the bill’s prospects in the Senate.

Trump, who had held his tongue while his former adviser attempted to torpedo his signature legislative effort, finally broke his silence on Thursday.

From the Oval Office, he expressed “deep disappointment” in Musk, remarking, “Look, Elon and I had a great relationship.”

“I don’t know if we will anymore.”

The gloves, it seemed, were off.

As Trump spoke, Musk retaliated with increasingly acerbic posts on X.

“Without me, Trump would have lost the election,” he declared, adding a biting “Such ingratitude.”

The escalation was swift and brutal.

Trump, taking to Truth Social, threatened to sever government contracts with Musk’s empire, stating, “The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts.”

The market reacted instantly and harshly: Tesla, Musk’s electric vehicle powerhouse, shed approximately $150 billion in value, closing down a staggering 14.3% for the day.

Not long after the closing bell, Musk offered a terse “Yes” to a post on X suggesting Trump should be impeached – a provocative jab at a former ally, albeit one with little practical chance of success given Republican majorities in Congress.

This wasn’t just a clash of titans; it was a public divorce between two of America’s most outsized personalities, each accustomed to wielding immense power and influence.

Musk had been an ever-present ally in the 2024 campaign, serving as the biggest Republican donor, pouring nearly $300 million into supporting Trump and other GOP candidates.

His presence wasn’t merely financial; as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), he became one of Trump’s most visible advisers, frequently seen at the White House and on Capitol Hill, sometimes even with his young son in tow.

The DOGE, under Musk’s leadership, had embarked on an ambitious, if ultimately modest, effort to downsize the federal workforce and slash spending, eliminating thousands of jobs and billions in foreign aid, causing widespread disruption and legal challenges.

Yet, despite his brash plans to cut $2 trillion from the federal budget, Musk left his government post last week having cut only about half of one percent of total spending.

The irony of Musk, the self-proclaimed efficiency czar, now railing against “disgusting pork” in a Republican bill was not lost on observers.

While Musk insisted his opposition was rooted in fiscal conservatism, challenging Trump’s current spending spree by pulling up past quotes from the former president decrying federal spending (“Where is this guy today?”), Trump offered a different narrative.

He asserted that Musk’s true grievance lay in the elimination of consumer tax credits for electric vehicles, or perhaps, more personally, that Musk simply “missed working for Trump.”

“He’s not the first,” Trump mused, “People leave my administration… then at some point they miss it so badly, and some of them embrace it and some of them actually become hostile.”

It was a pointed suggestion that Musk’s high-minded principles were merely a cover for bruised ego or financial self-interest.

Musk, however, vehemently denied this, stating he was “fine” with EV credit cuts as long as the bill was purged of its “mountain of disgusting pork.”

The repercussions of this dramatic public rupture extend far beyond the immediate financial hit to Tesla.

Musk’s businesses, particularly SpaceX and its Starlink satellite unit, are deeply intertwined with critical U.S. government operations.

SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft is currently the sole U.S. vehicle capable of ferrying astronauts to the International Space Station, while its Falcon 9 rockets have made it the world’s most active launch provider.

Musk’s threat to begin decommissioning the Dragon spacecraft, a direct response to Trump’s contract threats, underscores the precariousness of such high-stakes alliances when personal animosity takes hold.

Politically, the feud could prove equally damaging.

A prolonged public battle between these two influential figures could complicate Republican efforts to maintain control of Congress in next year’s midterm elections.

Musk’s capacity to connect Trump to Silicon Valley and wealthy donors, combined with his immense online following, made him an invaluable asset.

His recent poll on X, asking his 220 million followers if it was “time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle,” signals a potential shift in his political engagement, perhaps away from traditional party alignments.

Moreover, Musk’s increasing focus on politics had already provoked widespread protests at Tesla sites and investor fretting over his divided attention, driving down sales even before this latest blowup.

The White House, through an official speaking on background, sought to underscore the administration’s stance: “The president is making it clear: this White House is not beholden to Elon Musk on policy,” the official stated.

“By attacking the bill the way he did, Musk has clearly picked a side.”

This statement, delivered just days after Trump and Musk had held a joint appearance in the Oval Office praising each other’s service, highlights the speed and severity of the alliance’s unraveling.

This isn’t merely a policy disagreement; it’s a raw, public display of power, ego, and the transactional nature of influence in Washington.

The “bromance” may be over, replaced by a bitter feud that promises to continue reshaping the intersection of business, technology, and American politics for the foreseeable future.
