In an era where the global energy narrative is heavily dominated by the pursuit of renewables, Southeast Asia is challenging the trend with a pragmatic choice that speaks volumes about the region’s energy strategy.

As reported in a new analysis by Wood Mackenzie, natural gas is set to become the dominant source of primary energy in Southeast Asia by 2050, surpassing coal and crude oil with a projected share of 30%. This shift reflects a nuanced approach to energy transition, prioritizing reliability and economic imperatives over the sometimes idealistic push for an immediate green overhaul.

Southeast Asia’s reliance on coal is not surprising, given the region’s abundant resources and the cost-effectiveness of coal-fired power generation. Coal has been a steadfast ally in meeting the surging electricity demands driven by rapid industrialization and economic growth across countries like Vietnam.

This nation, in particular, exemplifies the region’s energy conundrum. Despite making significant strides in solar energy, Vietnam remains heavily tethered to coal to fuel its burgeoning manufacturing sector, even as it continues to expand its renewable energy capacity. The challenges of relying solely on renewables were starkly highlighted by recent experiences in Spain and Portugal, where intermittent energy supplies underscored the need for a reliable backup. In Southeast Asia, this role is increasingly expected to fall to natural gas.

According to Wood Mackenzie, the demand for natural gas is anticipated to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 3.1% until 2035, driven by factors such as expanding economies, the proliferation of data centers, and the limitations of renewable energy sources.

This burgeoning demand for natural gas is not without its challenges. The region’s inability to meet its consumption needs through domestic production alone points to a looming dependency on imports.

Forecasts suggest that Southeast Asia will transition to becoming a net importer of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by 2032, with demand for LNG soaring by 182% over the next decade. This anticipated growth presents both an opportunity and a challenge; while it could spur local production efforts in countries like Indonesia and Malaysia, it also underscores the region’s vulnerability to global market fluctuations and supply chain disruptions.

Yet, the supply side of this equation is fraught with uncertainties. The International Gas Union has warned of a potential 22% global supply shortfall by 2030 if gas demand continues to grow at current rates without corresponding production developments.

This broader context of potential global shortages suggests that the anticipated gas glut might be more of a mirage than reality, especially as construction of new LNG capacities lags behind projections.

The narrative of natural gas as a ‘bridge fuel’ has been contentious, with detractors highlighting its status as a hydrocarbon and its environmental implications. Despite this, gas is steadily reasserting itself as a cleaner alternative to coal.

However, the high costs associated with gas could pose a significant barrier, potentially prolonging coal’s dominance in the region.

For Southeast Asia, the energy strategy is clear: growth requires reliable, dispatchable energy. Natural gas is emerging as the pragmatic choice to balance the region’s immediate energy needs with the longer-term goal of energy transition.

This approach doesn’t just reflect an energy choice but a strategic economic decision, acknowledging the complex realities of energy transition in a rapidly developing region.

The decision to prioritize natural gas over an immediate switch to renewables could serve as a blueprint for other developing regions grappling with similar challenges. It emphasizes the importance of a balanced, realistic approach to energy policy—one that considers economic growth, energy security, and environmental impact in equal measure.

As Southeast Asia looks to the future, its energy strategy underscores a critical lesson: the path to sustainability is not a one-size-fits-all journey but rather one that must be tailored to the unique needs and circumstances of each region.
