Generation X, that often-overlooked cohort wedged between the much-ballyhooed Baby Boomers and Millennials, is finally having its moment in the sun. A new report from Fidelity reveals a surge in the number of 401(k) millionaires, especially among Gen Xers.

In the third quarter alone, the number of these retirement accounts worth $1 million or more jumped by 9.5%, with 544,000 people now basking in millionaire status. It’s an increase from 497,000 in the previous quarter, and Gen X is the group leading the charge, their average balances now standing at a hefty $586,100.

But what does this mean for the financial landscape, and why should we care? Well, for starters, it’s a testament to the power of long-term investing and perhaps a vindication for a generation that has often been characterized as cynical or jaded.

People born between 1965 and 1980 have been quietly but diligently contributing to their retirement plans, and now, as many approach the autumn of their working years, they’re seeing the fruits of their labor.

Roger Stiles, president of Fidelity Wealth, couldn’t be more pleased. He notes that the oldest Gen Xers are closing in on retirement and stresses the importance of securing a nest egg that can provide comfort and stability.

While their 401(k) balances rose by 6% this past quarter, their Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) saw an even more impressive average increase of 35% over the past year. Clearly, Gen X is not just resting on its laurels; it’s actively fortifying its financial future.

Yet, this rosy picture isn’t without its shadows. Americans, in general, are becoming more attuned to the importance of retirement savings, as evidenced by the average retirement account balances all seeing double-digit percentage increases over the past year.

However, Fidelity’s report also highlights a worrying trend: nearly two out of four workers cash out their 401(k) when switching jobs. This might provide immediate financial relief, but it can be a costly decision, leading to penalties and taxes, and depriving account holders of the tax-deferred growth these plans offer.

The financial future of Gen X may be looking up, but for many others, the road is still fraught with challenges. A recent study by the National Council on Aging revealed that a staggering 80% of households with older adults are either financially struggling or at risk of doing so.

This underscores the importance of financial literacy and planning across all generations.

So, while it’s tempting to celebrate the rise of Gen X 401(k) millionaires as a sign of economic optimism, it’s essential to remember that the real victory is in understanding the importance of disciplined saving and investing. As the stock market continues its unpredictable dance, those who can stay the course and resist the urge to cash out in times of uncertainty are likely to be the true winners in the end.

The lesson here? Patience and perseverance, the often unsung virtues, are still in vogue—and perhaps more crucial than ever.
